Wrightsville Beach consistently finds itself listed as one of the top ten surf towns in the US, and Sweetwater Surf Shop is at the center of our surfing scene. The shop is a local landmark established in 1976. In 1995, Chuck Bourgeois and family took over the business. Chuck brought his industry experience in sporting goods retail and some family star power with a champion local surfer, son Ben Bourgeois. The transition was a natural one. We’ve been doing our best to catch up with Danielle Bourgeois, the most visible clan member in the shop. While Danielle spends most of her time on the floor, her dad and her twin sister Shana spend most of their time in an administrative role from their office, strategically positioned just above the shop on Lumina.
Danielle attended Laney High School before she and her sister attended East Carolina University for a short time. In Greenville, the girls were nothing but homesick for Wrightsville Beach, so they soon returned to continue school at UNCW. Home where she belonged, Danielle studied business focusing on her personal and career goals.
Danielle is the face of Sweetwater Surf Shop, and anyone who’s been in knows who the boss is. Danielle’s proud of her shop’s accomplishments, too. She’s especially proud of them for winning the regional and national Oakley Surf Shop Challenge for several consecutive years and the team has just travelled to Bali to compete in the 2013 final event. The team consists of Michael Powell, Conner Lester, Knox Harris and Michael Casper. These kids all rip and are all a lot of fun to be in the water with, just expect your wave count to drop.
Danielle loves her work and home on Wrightsville Beach. She definitely glows with joy as she moves through the shop and life. You might see Danielle or Shana running their version of the Loop or doing Yoga at BeUnlimited. The whole family lives on the same street on Harbor Island, and it seems they wouldn’t mind if it stayed that way forever. Danielle’s only complaint is that she doesn’t get to spend as much time with her brother as she would like to. Her brother Ben Bourgeois is the best surfer ever to come out of the area, but that’s another story.
Danielle loves sharing her joy in her life and work at Sweetwater Surf Shop on Lumina Street downtown (you know where it is). This place is not just another surf shop – it’s a local family affair where they work and play hard together. We’re so proud to have them in our Loop community and look forward to seeing the shop next to our own “sweet water” for decades to come.
